ALL descendancy charts follow the surname only and exclude people born within the last hundred years.
• Linked names will take you to the chart for that surname, with the focused person at the top of the page...
• Unless the linked name is at the top of the tree, in which case, you'll land back on the chart of direct ancestors.
• Hovering over a name, date or event should reveal brief source information.
• Smartphones mess up the layout. Rotating to landscape mode can make things a bit more readable.
* MICHEL Muzard (1755-1821) became the step-father of our direct ancestor, John Francis Chopin (1774-1835), when he married John's mother, Jeanne, in 1788. Muzard owned extensive property in Haiti and Cuba, and enjoyed a considerable fortune off the coffee, tobacco, sugar, and cotton trades. After the Haiti rebellion, such sources of income were cut off and he slid deeper and deeper into debt. It's hard to feel too sorry for him, considering that his wealth was the product of slavery. However, the loss seems to have influenced his son-in-law Auguste when he recorded a tale about a wizard who almost succeeds in grasping the Devil's riches, only to be thwarted at the last moment by a bunch of treacherous villagers. This fiction, included in Auguste's travel memoir 'Voyage à Rennes-les-Bains' (1832), was later appropriated by conspiracy theorists to shore up the myth of a secret treasure sealed in nearby Rennes-le-Château. In 2003 the "mystery" of Rennes-le-Château went viral, with the publication of Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code'.
